Jon Lauckner, GM's vice president of global product planning, [says] that his team set out to trump gas-powered cars as a matter of straightforward economics, especially as economic recovery pushes the price of gas back over $3 a gallon. "At that level," Lauckner says, "the cost of running a Volt in full electric mode will be about one-sixth that of a gas-driven car of the same size, 2 or 3 cents a mile rather than 12 to 15 cents a mile. We figured that, for most people, this means a savings of about $1,500 a year."

Nissan and Renault Equipped to Produce Up to 500,000 EV Batteries Annually
Nissan's CEO Carlos Ghosn announced late last week that his company along with partner Renault are equipped and ready to produce up to 500,000 batteries for EVs annually.
One car, the Nissan Leaf, goes on sale next year with a scheduled global release in 2012. The global release will be on a mass production scale and Nissan has secured production of batteries to meet demand.

L.A. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa announces electric vehicle infrastructure plan
By this time next year, electric vehicles could be popping up all around Los Angeles, and the "quintessential city of sprawl" plans to be ready, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa said Tuesday.
Along with a network of partners, the city plans to update 400 existing charging stations around the region while adding 100, Villaraigosa said. Electric vehicle owners also probably would receive tax rebates to construct home chargers and would have access to high-occupancy-vehicle lanes and preferential or free parking.

DETROIT — Even though several automakers plan to begin selling electric vehicles next year, their sales may be limited by the lack of a national infrastructure to support them, speakers at a conference here on plug-in cars said on Wednesday.

Chinese Maker Hopes to Offer Electric Car for U.S. by Year-End
DETROIT — After a disastrous year for the auto industry, carmakers are working hard to exude optimism and confidence at this year’s auto show.
On that score alone, the winner may be the Chinese company BYD Auto, which created a stir on Tuesday by announcing that it plans to start selling an electric car in California by the end of this year. That would make BYD the first company to sell Chinese-made vehicles in the United States.

Mitsubishi, Japan Delivery System develop electric vehicle charging system for apartment buildings
It's well known by now that, aside from the cost, the biggest hurdle to the adoption of EVs may be a lack of charging infrastructure available to people most likely to use these vehicles. Those would be urban dwellers, many of whom live in apartment buildings. If apartment residents are lucky enough to have access to a parking garage, odds there is no plug nearby.

Electric vehicle range: What, me worry?
To all those cities worrying about how they are going to get wired for electric vehicles: Fret not. "Range anxiety" may not be as acute as you think.
Studies of drivers who already have electric cars are finding that they prefer the convenience of charging at home, and despite their vehicles’ limited range, most are able to avoid public charging.
General Motors Corp.'s Chevrolet division says the Washington area will be one of three initial launch markets for its new Chevy Volt electric car, joining dealers in California and Michigan to be the first to get them.
Pepco is also buying 10 Volts for its fleet and has installed charging stations at several of its fleet garages. Pepco expects to take delivery of the cars later this year.

By late next year, the District will see some of its first charging stations to power electric cars.
GreenlightAC, a D.C. inventor of what it dubs the ChargeBar, said it has sold the company’s first three electric car charging units to be installed late next summer in a parking garage at 2101 L St. NW, a property of Vornado/Charles E. Smith and home of the U.S. Green Building Council.
The company said the charger’s debut is well-timed with the plans of some automakers that intend to produce electric vehicle models by the end of 2010 for Washington-area dealers.

In a move to overcome “range anxiety” among potential buyers of electric cars, Sonoma County and its nine cities are seeking grant funds for a network of up to 200 vehicle recharging stations.
The city-county coalition needs at least $1.5 million to install the stations — essentially specialized power outlets — intended to supply 1,000 electric vehicles to be purchased by the agencies and their employees.

Less than three years: that’s the wait time left for a plug-in hybrid from Toyota at commercial scale, according to reports this weekend from Japan’s Nikkei (h/t Reuters). Global Electric Vehicle and Battery Technology Leader CT&T United to Establish Multiple Facilities in Southeast and West Coast Regions to Manufacture Affordable Line of EVs by 2010

The SAE standard J1772 charging connector for plug-in vehicles passed another threshold on its way to finalization this week. Virtually all of the automakers from the U.S., Japan and Europe are planning to use the standard plug on upcoming electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles, including in the Chevy Volt.
WITH JUST ABOUT every volume-selling carmaker - and more than a few supercar and luxury manufacturers - getting set to offer all-electric vehicles in the near future, a universal infrastructure is vital.
So important is the electric car’s future in the new car market that, according to US consulting firm Pike Research, the number of recharge points for electric vehicles around the globe will surpass 5 million by the year 2015.
Ford Motor Co., Nissan Motors, and San Carlos-based Tesla Motors Inc, will all receive government financing to speed production of fuel-efficient cars.

WASHINGTON — Cars powered by hydrogen fuel cells, once hailed by President George W. Bush as a pollution-free solution for reducing the nation’s dependence on foreign oil, will not be practical over the next 10 to 20 years, the energy secretary said Thursday, and the government will cut off funds for the vehicles’ development.
Developing those cells and coming up with a way to transport the hydrogen is a big challenge, Energy Secretary Steven Chu said in releasing energy-related details of the administration’s budget for the year beginning Oct. 1. Dr. Chu said the government preferred to focus on projects that would bear fruit more quickly.

California became the first state in the nation Thursday to mandate carbon-based reductions in transportation fuels in an attempt to cut the state's overall greenhouse gas emissions.
The California Air Resources Board approved a phased-in reduction starting in 2011, with a goal of shrinking carbon impacts 10 percent by 2020. Fuel producers can comply in different ways, such as providing a cleaner fuel portfolio, blending low-carbon ethanol with gasoline or purchasing credits from other clean-energy producers. >>read more<<

Johnson Controls-Saft (JCI) will renovate a factory in Holland, Michigan, which it will use to build batteries for hybrid cars from Ford (F), BMW, and Azure Dynamics.
The cost of the renovation is expected to be $220 million, but Michigan is giving Johnson-Saft $148.5 million in tax credits and incentives, so the real cost for the company should only be $71.4 million. Salt Lake City-based Green Star Products, Inc. (GSPI) plans to revive its electric vehicle production in the United States.
Green Star (formerly Battery Automated Technology International) produced electric vehicles from 1992 to 1998, but suspended production when the expected market for electric cars—particularly in California—failed to materialize.
